Troubleshooting Upload Issues
Having trouble uploading your resume or the preview looks off? Use this guide to fix the most common issues so your file parses cleanly for ATS and our analyzer.
Supported file types & limits
- Formats: PDF (recommended) and DOCX.
- Size: up to 5 MB.
- Pages: up to 3 pages recommended for best results.
Tip: Export a fresh copy from your editor to ensure a clean, non‑corrupted file.
Parsing looks wrong
- Rename headings to standard labels: Experience, Education, Skills, Projects, Certifications.
- Ensure your name and contact info are text (not in a header/footer graphic).
- Replace special bullets or icons with standard text bullets.
- Remove background shapes behind text that can interfere with extraction.
Scanned PDFs / images of text
If your PDF was created by scanning a paper resume or exporting from an image‑based tool, it may be an image of text (no selectable characters).
- Open the PDF and try to select text with your cursor. If you can’t, it’s likely scanned.
- Solution: convert to real text by copying content into a word processor and exporting to PDF, or use the original DOCX.
Fonts & encoding
- Use common fonts (Inter, Arial, Calibri, Times, Helvetica). Avoid decorative or embedded fonts.
- Remove ligatures/rare glyphs; replace fancy bullets with standard • or -.
- Ensure the file is saved with Unicode text (default in modern editors).
Tables, columns, and text boxes
Tables and multi‑column layouts can scramble reading order for ATS.
- Avoid tables for core sections. Keep core content in a single main column.
- Do not place contact info inside shapes or headers/footers that export as images.
- Prefer simple left‑aligned text with standard headings.
Browser & caching issues
- Try another browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari) and ensure it’s up to date.
- Disable extensions that modify downloads/uploads (ad blockers, privacy tools) and retry.
- Hard refresh and clear cache for the site, then upload again.
- Check your network/firewall if uploads stall or time out.
Password-protected files
Remove any passwords or restrictions from your PDF/DOCX before uploading. Encrypted files cannot be parsed.
Quick checklist
- PDF or DOCX, under 5 MB
- Text is selectable (not scanned)
- No tables for core sections; standard headings
- Common fonts; simple bullets
- Latest browser; try another if needed
